Baptisms 1813 to 1881
This coastal settlement was a major home for fishing. A fleet drawn up on the beaches were largely engaged in the herring industry. The occupations of fathers listed shows the predominence of this activity. Other occupations indicate the farming and wildfowling communities inland. Of interest to researchers from outside Norfolk are the occasional entry for the Coast Guards (or Preventive Service). Often these families moved around the coast and prove an interesting challenge in locating families, especially if absent from census records. Today Winterton earns its living largely from the "Bucket & Spade" trade taking advantage of its coastal location and sandy beaches. The extensive sand dune system north from the village is now conserved as a nature reserve. |
