1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Great Yarmouth Wesleyan Methodist Circuit |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The Wesleyan Methodist Circuit for Great Yarmouth and
district was created in 1792 from the earlier circuit centered
on the city of Norwich. The circuit covered not only the port
itself but also a great deal of eastern Norfolk and adjacent
Suffolk including as far south as the neighbouring port of
Lowestoft. The Circuit was administered from the Wesleyan chapel
in Dene Side in Great Yarmouth. Records of baptism commence from
1791, a few were back-dated after the circuit was created. Two
registers cover the period of this transcript, the first,
deposited with The National Archives as their deposit RG4/1974,
is a plain unruled book, the register is held on film MF1158 at
Norfolk Record Office but also digitised images are available on
some of the major commercial sites for those with appropriate
subscriptions. The second book has a similar style to a standard
parish baptismal register but lacks the employment column, it
too is filmed on film MF1733 which was used to prepare that
portion of the transcript, it is a 1660-entry book. Those
familiar with Methodist Circuit registers will recognise the
usual difficulties, irregular date sequence, phonetic spelling
and frequent loss of normal data, e,g lack of a complete date,
children apparently baptised before born, lack or a surname or
even a given name. The quality of clerical standard is rather
varied from perfectly acceptable through to the downright nasty,
a few misreads could be present as a consequence. |
