Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Wymondham, one of Norfolk's larger ones
by acreage, lies about 10 miles southwest of the City of Norwich. The
market town, formerly traversed and now thankfully bypassed by the main
Norwich to London road A11, has a substantial population and whilst its
function nowadays is largely as a dormitory settlement to Norwich formerly
it was an important religious and market centre. The town has Saxon origins
and the Abbey and Priory clearly helped to establish Wymondham as a major
population centre. Its position as the first stop on the coaching route
to London enhanced this role. The parish is large in area covering a substantial
area of cereal farmland. Wymondham also functioned as the central place
for much of central Norfolk being the home of a major hiring fair. |

As you would expect for a large market town the registers are also substantial. Three standard 2400-entry registers cover the period of this transcript. The first runs from 1813 to 1834, the second from there to 1857, the third runs beyond the end of the transcript period and continues to 1893. All three registers have been filmed twice by the archive, the film of most recent filming, Microfilm MFRO370 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office, being of an admirable quality was used to prepare this transcript. The images were excellent and the only caveat is that which one would expect in such a large volume of records - the handwriting is on occasion challenging - as a consequence there may be some errors as a result of misreads. |
