Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Wretton lies in
southwestern Norfolk roughly 7 miles southeast of the market town
of Downham Market. Wretton sits about a mile south of the A134
road which runs from the port of King's Lynn through western
Norfolk to Thetford. Wretton is a small and compact village
sitting on the edges of Norfolk's portion of The Fens almost at
the point where the River Wissey runs out into Fenland. Wretton
village is barely above sea level, just 3 metres, and much of the
parish has the effects of historic drainage efforts wrought upon
the landscape. The result of this activity is to reveal prime
agricultural land, the rich and peaty soils being excellent for
growing table vegetables as well as the more traditional cereals.
The areas more prone to flooding were set to pasture, almost 1/4
of the parish acreage would have been pasture and meadow according
to early gazetteers. Today's landscape is dominated by the vast
sugar producing complex at nearby Wissington where beet is turned
to sweetness and which odour often fills the nose. |

Sadly not all the registers covering the transcript period are in the public domain as the baptismal register from 1862 onward remains with the church. That covering 1813 - 1862 is filmed on Microfilm MF976 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which, along with occasional reference to online imagery to resolve issues, was used to prepare this transcript. From 1863 onward entries were retrieved from the Bishop's Transcripts which are sadly incomplete, like virtually all Norfolk parishes 1875 is missing resulting in the loss of 13 entries if the numbering is correct. Should the second register come into the public eye then the gap will be filled and the entries verified for other years. |
