Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of East Wretham (which also incorporates the
defunct parish of West Wretham) lies in southwest Norfolk. The village
is about 4 miles northeast of the market town of Thetford and lies adjacent
to the ancient trackway of Peddar's Way north of the A11 which links Norwich
to London. The parish forms a significant part of the Norfolk Breckland
an area of poor sandy soils unsuitable for agriculture and largely given
over to sheep and rabbit warrens at the time of this transcript. Nowadays
the area is impinged by the large STANTA Army tank training area and thus
much is out of bounds to the general public. Such is the presence of the
military that the village is somewhat dwarfed by the camps. |

A single standard 800-entry register covers the period of the transcript and continues beyond to 1936. This register is filmed on Microfiche 3 and 4 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The fiche are frankly elderly and of a poor quality - there was frequent reference to the more adequate images on-line at Familysearch to achieve an accurate transcript. Hopefully as a result there will be few errors within the finished article. |
