Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Little Witchingham
lies in eastern central Norfolk about 2 1/2 miles southeast of the
small market town of Reepham. Little Witchingham is one of the
smaller parishes in Norfolk, just 730 acres and fewer than 50
inhabitants. Little Witchingham is an estate village with most
land held by a single landholder, the Howard family of Little
Witchingham Hall, and inbound migration discouraged this led to
there being no village as such for the parish. Properties are
scattered across the small acreage with no distinct clump that one
could call the centre. The land hereabouts sits above the valley
of the River Wensum and is flat and fairly featureless dominated
by large arable fields which have always been the mainstay of the
economy. The broad lane running from Norwich to Reepham cuts
through the parish separating church and hall which lie either
side. |

The parish continued to utilise their composite register for the first 4 entries of this period thence a single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the remaining period of this transcript but runs onward to its deposit incomplete, baptisms to 1936. This register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO660 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. This is a modern film with crisp and clear images achieved by the better techniques of more recent filming. In recent times digitised images of this register have also appeared on the commercial web sites and are available for those with a subscription.. This choice of media enables a straightforward piece to be prepared. |
