Baptisms 1813 to 1873
The parish of Wilton, nowadays
united with neighbouring Hockwold but formerly separate, lies in
the extreme southwest of Norfolk forming an extensive stretch of
the border with neighbouring Suffolk and being very close to
Cambridgeshire too. Wilton is located about 3 miles west of the
Suffolk market town of Brandon and sits a mile east of the B1112
road which connects Feltwell with the Suffolk town of Lakenheath.
Wilton & Hockwold, whilst being separate villages have merged
almost into a continuous whole, Wilton being the easternmost
extension of the presence along the B1112. Both villages sit in
the northern banks of the Little Ouse where the man-made drainage
of the Cut-Off Channel cuts across the course of the river in a
complex of sluices, the area marks the edge where Breckland morphs
into Fenland. To the east of Wilton rises a sandy heathland, home
to Wood-lark, Stone Curlews and stunted misshapen pines, whilst to
the west begins the great flat drained plain of peaty and rich
agricultural land that is Fenland. The economy of the two halves
of the parish would have been vastly different, to the east, sheep
and rabbits graze and flints were harvested for building and as
generators of sparks, to the west rich arable land dominated by
vast fields often with market garden produce. |

At present the registers covering the period of this transcript have not yet been fully deposited, a single standard 800-entry register runs to 1867 and if filmed on Microfilm MF1437 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. Thereafter these entries come from the extant Bishop's Transcripts which expire following 1873 leaving the final years awaiting deposit and incomplete. Should that second register eventually reach the public domain this transcript will be reviewed, corrected and completed. The records which are available are all fairly straightforward making for a simple piece to prepare. |
