The parish of Wiggenhall St Mary the Virgin, one of 4
Wiggenhall parishes, lies in western Norfolk in the heart of the Fens.
Wiggenhall St Mary the Virgin lies about 4 miles southwest of the port
of King's Lynn close the River Great Ouse which exits to the Wash through
the port. The parish includes the line of one of Fenland's major drains
(Middle Level Main Drain) and lies in a almost flat landscape barely a
couple of metres above sea level. There are no major roads through or
to the area merely geometrically arranged lanes to the east of the A47
which links King's Lynn to the Cambridgeshire market town of Wisbech.
The parish is typical of Fenland having flat open fields set mainly to
market gardening and arable crops under the enormous Fenland skies, there
being no high ground to clutter the horizon. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of the transcript. This register has been deposited with Wisbech's Fen Museum but a microfilm copy is held by Norfolk Record Office on film MF566 which was used to prepare this transcript. The film is of a good quality and the handwriting, too,is mostly perfectly acceptable making for a straightforward transcript to prepare. Hopefully few errors will have been introduced in the production of this transcript. |
