Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalene lies in West
Norfolk, adjacent to the River Great Ouse and south of the port of King's
Lynn. St Mary Magdalene is the southernmost of the four Wiggenhall parishes,
deep in the west Norfolk Fens and barely a metre above sea level. The
village is built around a crossroads just west of one of only four crossings
of the Great Ouse between King's Lynn and Downham Market. The area today
is still intensely agricultural with the deep peat on the Fen growing
much of the salad produce for Britain. The area is characterised by wide
open skies and level fields all protected by the drainage channels that
carry water out to the Wash. |

Two standard 800-entry registers cover the period of the transcript. These registers are deposited at the Wisbech Fenland Archive but microfilm copies (On Film MF564) are held at the Norfolk Record Office and from these this transcript has been produced. The films are of rather poor quality, a "normal" rather than the usual negative image, and very faint. In places this film was unreadable and resort had to be made to the parallel copies of the Bishop's Transcripts in order to achieve something close to a readable image. As a consequence this was not a straightforward transcript to prepare and the transcript comes with a large caveat as to accuracy. Hopefully errors are few but confidence is low on this occasion. |
