Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Wicklewood lies in the eastern part of central
Norfolk about 2 miles northwest of the market town of Wymondham. Wicklewood
is located roughly a half mile south of the B1135 road which links Wymondham
with East Dereham. Wicklewood is a substantial village built largely around
a collection of lanes which form a reversed "D" shape, the easternmost
running north/south and the others curving to join to the west. Wicklewood
would have been largely an agricultural community, the soils are light
and easily worked hereabouts, the village sits on a ridge of higher ground
which heads westwards. To the north the land falls into the valley of
a tributary of the River Tiffey and the landscaped grounds of the Kimberley
estate. With the coming of the mid-Norfolk Railway Wicklewood saw some
notable growth and today it serves a newer role as a commuter village
for Norwich little more than 10 miles away. |

Two register books cover the period of the transcript. The first is a standard 800-entry prenumbered book, this is filmed on Microfiche 7 & 8 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office, the second is a nonstandard 800 entry book, it is nonstandard in not being prenumbered, the clerk has also decided to continue numbering from 801 after the end of the first register. It should be noted there is at least one clerical error in the numbering. The second book is filmed on Microfiche 9 & 10. The fiche are rather elderly and the image quality is not as good as more modern filmings, thankfully there are images of these registers on the free web site Familysearch and these were referred to to obtain a complete transcript. |
