Whittington Christ Church

Baptisms 1813 to 1880

The parish of Whittington was created in the late 1870s from that of Northwold to serve the small community in Whittington which sits on the southern banks of the River Wissey. Whittington is roughly 8 miles southeast of the market town of Downham Market and sits in the fork formed between the A134 (Downham Market to Brandon) road and the B1112 (Stoke Ferry to Lakenheath). Whittington sits on the edge of Norfolk's share of Fenland and is served by rich arable soils which make high value crops a speciality with most of the parish engaged in arable farming in this flat terrain. The Wissey drains westwards into Fenland reaching the Great Ouse and the North Sea without any significant loss of height between Whittington and it mouth.

Christ Church was built between 1874 & 1875 to serve the new parish and it sits just east of the A134 roughly midway through the village. As Pevsner states it is a plain rectangular box without internal or external division and fitted out in a "curvilinear" style (the style is characterised by a curving line used to form abstract patterns, such as spirals, circles, swirls, and S-shapes). The only external adornment is the addition of a western bellcote. The main entrance to the churchyard sits at the junction of the A134 with Church Lane with the latter best suited for parking given the busyness of the main road, a small iron gate grants entry to a small churchyard that has few obstacles for the photographer.

Records for the parish have yet to be deposited but a single Bishops' Transcript has sneaked into the Norfolk Record Office and therefore into this project. it indicates that entries began soon after the church was consecrated. Should the official baptismal register make its way into the Record Office the transcript will be extended and if required corrected.
