1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Watton Primitive Methodist Circuit |
Baptisms 1832 to 1869
The origins of the Watton Primitive Methodist Circuit and, in particular the registers utilised, are a little obscure. Whilst these register are catalogued as being from the Watton Circuit, a sub-circuit of Attleborough & Wymondham Circuit, many of the earliest entries appear to relate to a circuit based upon the Suffolk town of Brandon and covering a wide area of northwestern Suffolk and adjacent Cambridgeshire. Whilst the Watton area also features strongly, as well as much of southwestern Norfolk it is likely this circuit should best be described at being the Brandon & Watton Primitive Methodist Circuit. Entries cover two registers, deposits FC107/4 & FC107/5 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which are filmed on Microfilm MF1731. The first register has entries spread over a double-page spread ruled for 10 entries per double page, the register carries no numbering but a sequence number has been utilised to allow faster re-finding. The second register is a standard "parish" type register with 8 entries per page and is numbered. The image quality of the film was acceptable throughout but the same cannot be said for the clerical standard. Users of such Methodist registers will be familiar with the eccentric spelling, which has been left "as written". In addition there are numerous examples of missing data, unnamed children, incomplete dates and missing parents as well as the chaotic dating sequence , a more pertinent problem is the numerous examples of children apparently baptised prior to birth which dot the registers - a warning not to trust such birth dates is formally given. |
