Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Walsoken is not
quite the westernmost parish in Norfolk, it is beaten by a few
yards by its northern neighbour West Walton, but still manages to
form part of the border with neighbouring Cambridgeshire and
Lincolnshire, too, is not so far away. Walsoken, once a distinct
Fenland village in its own right, has nowadays been absorbed into
the growing town that it comprises with neighbouring Wisbech, the
county border wandering between houses and largely unmarked. This
area of the county is rather low-lying, Walsoken sits at just 3
metres above sea level at the church, with much of the land the
result of medieval land reclamation. Today the wider parish
supports intensely rich arable land, whilst cereals and other
typical crops are grown the wealth of the land comes from market
gardening products with onions, root vegetables and orchard fruit
being prevalent in the rich soils. The twin settlements were once
bisected by the busy A47 road, which links Norfolk with the
Midlands, but thankfully this now bypasses the built area to the
south. |

Records for Fenland parishes are deposited at Wisbech Fenland Museum as two volumes covering the period of this transcript, both volumes are standard 1600-entry register books. The first register running to 1850 is also filmed at Norfolk Record Office on Microfilm MF447 which was used to prepare this transcript, the second volume is not filmed and was consulted at the museum, with thanks to the staff both paid and voluntary for providing the original book. Whilst the volume of entries is large and clerical style and quality varies immensely this was, as a consequence, a straightforward piece to prepare. For additional security in establishing a "good" transcript the extant Bishop's Transcripts were consulted, it was noted that there were extensive differences between the spellings in the two sequences, clearly the parish clerks were not adept at transcribing. |
