Baptisms 1813 to 1880
North Walsham is a substantial market town in North-eastern
Norfolk. Situated roughly 5 miles in from the North Sea coast the town
is on the south-western bank of the River Ant which drains into the main
Broadland system to the south-east. North Walsham grew substantially during
Mediaeval times thanks to the growth of the cloth trade sparked by the
arrival of Flemish weavers. Nowadays the town is a regional shopping centre
with all of the facilities to be expected of a small market town. A great
asset to the own is the preservation of the Norwich to Cromer rail line
which has leant a new function as a commuting location for workers to
Norwich. |

Two register books cover the period of this transcript - the first a 1600-entry register finishes in late 1838 and a 2400-entry register continues from there to finish just beyond the period of this transcript. These two volumes are filmed and held on Microfiche at the Norfolk Record Office, however the quality of the microfiche is such that on this occasion they were inadequate for the production of a transcript. The fiche are rather elderly and the images are frequently faded completely to invisibility. As a consequence the images held on the LDS Familysearch website were used to prepare this transcript. These images too are rather difficult to view being also faded - due to the quality of the source material - but judicious use of Paint Shop was able to manipulate the quality to the point where this became a straightforward transcript to prepare. However, it must be stated that the registers were frequently irregular with entries often considerably out of strict date order and the quality of hand was often taxing. As a consequence this transcript is not expected to be without error. |
