1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Tottenhill St Botolph |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Tottenhill lies in
western Norfolk roughly midway between the port of King's Lynn and
the market town of Downham Market, being roughly 6 miles from
each. Tottenhill sits just east of the A10 road which connects the
two in the fork made with the A134 (King's Lynn to Thetford) road.
Tottenhill is a small and compact village with a further presence,
of mainly commercial premises, along the busy A10. Around the
village are a series of water-filled pits, a legacy of the
extraction of sand and gravel from the area. The area is fairly
low-lying, being close to both the edge of Norfolk's Fenland and
also on the edge of the broad valley of the River Nar. As a
consequence the farming here would have carried much more pastoral
use than is the norm in Norfolk. The village is underlain by
carrstone beds, an iron rich sandstone much used in the village
for decorative stonework giving a rich umber colouration. |

A single standard 800 entry register book covers the period from 1813 to 1878, the register onward has yet to be deposited but thankfully a complete run of Bishop's Transcripts allows the full period to be covered. The register book is filmed on Microfilm MF1687 which is a relatively recent film and benefits from the improved techniques available nowadays. In recent times digitised images from this film have become available to those with a subscription to the major commercial sites improving accessibility. Few problems were noted making for a straightforward piece to prepare. |
