The twin villages of Tivetshall
St Mary & St Margaret lie in southern Norfolk, Tivetshall St
Mary being the more southern of the two and sitting roughly 5
miles north of the market town of Diss. Tivetshall St Mary sits
roughly a mile west of the A140 (Norwich to Ipswich) road and
largely consists of a linear strip of properties lining a westward
running lane from the A140 to the notional centre close to
Tivetshall St Margaret. The twin villages are neatly embraced by
road to the east and rail line to the west. In early gazetteers
the populations of the two villages were roughly equal with St
Margaret some 10% more populous but both holding between 300 &
400 parishioners. This area of Norfolk, lying a few miles north of
the Waveney valley, is one of the more plateau-like within the
county, a stretch of rich arable land sitting at roughly 50 metres
above sea level and dominated by cereal production. |

In addition digitised images of the fiche are available to view online, freely on Familysearch and for those with a subscription to all of the major commercial providers. This plethora of imagery makes for a straightforward piece to prepare. |
