Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Tibenham lies in southern Norfolk about
6 miles north of the market town of Diss and a similar distance southeast
of Attleborough. Tibenham is a strangely shaped village, most properties
lies along a curving lane which turns back on itself leaving and rejoining
the lane which connects Winfarthing to Carleton Rode. Tibenham sits in
a broad area devoid of major roads, a couple of minor (B-class) roads
passing only as close as a couple of miles. Today this area is intensely
agricultural whereas descriptions from the 19th century state at least
a quarter of the land was used as meadow & pasture. To Tibenham's
southeast is a legacy of World War II, Tibenham airfield was developed
as early as the First World War and extended in the second as a heavy
bomber base, today it is the centre for skydivers to practice their jumps.

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript, the latter runs onwards to completion in the 1920s. These registers are filmed on Microfiche 5 - 8 in the collection of Norfolk Record, however, the fiche are rather elderly. Images of these register are also available to view freely on Familysearch and as part of a subscription on both commercial sites and they are much superior in quality and have functionality to process the images for better readability. As a consequence this was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
