1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Thursford St Andrew |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Thursford lies in
northern Norfolk just northeast of the market town of Fakenham. The parish
is about 5 miles northeast adjacent to the road that links Fakenham with
Holt (A148). Most of the housing is located either around a crossroads of
lanes just north of the A148 or a mile further west at Thursford Green.
The parish occupies relatively high ground for Norfolk being around 80 metres
above sea level, however like most of Norfolk the land use is largely in
wide open arable fields of grain, beet or oil seed. St Andrew's church is situated roughly midway between the two present day settlements in the grounds of what was once Thursford Hall. It is a curious mixture of a church with an 11th century doorway and 14th century tower but the main body of the church is Victorian. This Victorian, however, is surprisingly pleasing to Pevsner who describes the chancel as "interesting" although other features are a "disgrace". The church sits in lovely grounds with open fields commanding fine views. |

A single standard 800-entry register covers the period of the transcript and runs on to 1900. This register is filmed on microfiche 4 & 5 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and which was used to prepare this transcript. These fiche are rather elderly and the images are of poor quality, thankfully images are available on Familysearch for this register and these were consulted extensively to resolve issues making for a straightforward transcript to prepare. |
