Baptisms 1813 to 1880
St Peter's parish in Thetford is at the centre of
this market town of 3 parishes. Thetford is situated in
southwestern Norfolk on the banks of the Little Ouse river and
is the capital of the region of Breckland, which includes large
portions of adjacent Suffolk. The border (formerly the river and
through the heart of Thetford) now has been redrawn to the south
of Thetford's urban area for administrative reasons. Thetford is
a historic market town with a long history of occupation (indeed
some place its origin before Norwich) and a priory and castle to
show for it. The town grew especially in the 1960s having been
chosen as an "overspill" town for the excess population of the
London conurbation, this experiment has been of mixed success
with social issues making the town often a problem. |

Two standard register books cover the period of the transcript. The first of 1600 entries runs from 1813 through to 1868 whilst the second runs through to completion during the 1st World war is of 800 entries. Both register are filmed on Microfilm MFRO/748 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. Whilst this film is a recent re-filming of these registers, the better quality of image does little to mitigate the often poor clerical standard. Many clerks, most thankfully short-lived, have contributed to this lengthy transcript and the quality is best described as "curate's egg". Keen eyed viewers will notice many gaps in the numbering sequence this is usually occasioned by the habit of starting a new page with each new year, there are also some spoiled entries too. |
