1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Thetford St Mary |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
Thetford, the major market town of South-western Norfolk,
consists of three ancient parishes. Technically St Mary's parish was largely
within Suffolk and indeed the church itself, south of the river, was in
Suffolk until boundary changes in 1974. Thetford was the ancient capital
of East Anglia long before the cities of Norwich and Ipswich grew to prominence,
the town sits on the ancient A11 trunk route and was always a major market
for the surrounding area. |

These records were transcribed from microfiche
6 to 10 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. Of the two copies
(there being a further copy on microfilm) these were found to offer the
better image quality. However it is a relative position, the microfilm copy
is a positive (black on white) image and almost bleached to invisibility
in places, the microfiche is a standard negative image but also was faded
and of poor contrast. The period to 1826 in particular is very poor and
many entries were verified using the Bishop's Transcripts. With the poor image it would have been beneficial to have good quality legible hand-writing but once again the parish clerks failed to deliver good crisp entries. Given this combination of poor hand-writing and poor images it has to be stated that there is a probability that errors will have been made in the production of this transcript. It is to be hoped that these do not impede succesful research. |
