Baptisms 1813 to 1880
St Cuthbert's parish in Thetford is at the centre of this
market town of 3 parishes. Thetford is situated in southwestern Norfolk
on the banks of the Little Ouse river and is the capital of the region
of Breckland, which includes large portions of adjacent Suffolk. The border
(formerly the river and through the heart of Thetford) now has been redrawn
to the south of Thetford's urban area for administrative reasons. Thetford
is a historic market town with a long history of occupation (indeed some
place its origin before Norwich) and a priory and castle to show for it.
The town grew especially in the 1960s having been chosen as an "overspill"
town for the excess population of the London conurbation, this experiment
has been of mixed success with social issues making the town often a problem. |

Two standard 1600-entry registers cover the period of the transcript, the second continues beyond into the late 20th century. The first register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO378A, the second on MF1649 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The first film is poor partly as a result of the film quality of the day but also because the original was scruffy and faded to start. The second film is of modern quality and very acceptable to the task. Throughout the registers are erratically kept with entries out of sequence frequently, the regular habit of starting each year on a new page also led to irregularities as tempting blank space was occasionally filled by much later entries. To summarise the quality of the first register is such to raise a significant caveat but hopefully care has reduced the number of errors to just a few. |
