1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Terrington St John |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Terrington St John lies in Norfolk's Fenland,
the village is adjacent to the busy A47, which crosses Norfolk from east
to west, and is roughly midway between King's Lynn and Wisbech (where
it leaves the county to the west). This area is reclaimed land and lies
barely above sea-level, the village main street (formally part of the
A47 which now bypasses) is barely 3 metres above sea level. A landscape
of wide open skies and a land dominated by agriculture with much market
gardening on the silty soils. St John is one of two Terrington's in this
area its namesake is, however, a little further to the north adjacent
to the King's Lynn to Sleaford road. |

The registers for Terrington St John have been deposited with the Fenland Museum at Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, however a film copy (on Microfilm MF562 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office) is held in Norfolk. This film shows that two standard 800-entry registers cover the period of the transcript, the second continuing beyond the period of the project. This film is a peculiar "blue & white" colour typical of films produced by the Fenland Museum and in places is a little faint. However in the main it was readable and as a result this was a straightforward transcript to prepare, it is hoped few errors will have crept in to its production. |
