1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Swaffham St Peter & St Paul |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
Swaffham is one of the major market towns of Norfolk. The town grew up as a result of its location at a crossroads between major east-west & north-south routes. It's market was granted in the 13th century and the parish has swelled in population ever since. In the 1831 population census Swaffham was one the 10 most populous parishes in Norfolk making this transcript one of the largest in the project. St Peter & St Paul sits just off the market place, its size reflects the importance of the parish. It is a classic Norfolk Perpendicular church but on a grander scale than the normal village church. The seven bays indicate the population which had to be accommodated and the tower reflects the wealth of its benefactors. |

This transcript was compiled from fiche 15 to 25 of the collection at the Norfolk Record Office. Disappointingly the quality of the filming and clarity of hand are less than would be desired. Fortunately a large run of Bishop's Transcripts exists to validate any unclear entry and hopefully not too many entries will prove to have been inaccurate guesswork. |
