1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Suffield St Margaret |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Suffield lies in northeastern Norfolk
roughly 3 miles northwest of the market town of North Walsham.
Suffield is a highly dispersed settlement, a small collection of
properties sits on the southern edge of the parkland of Gunton
Park Estate but elsewhere lies a scatter of farms and cottages,
even the church is closer to neighbouring Colby than it is to
the above settlement. All of these properties lie scattered
along the eastern banks of a small tributary of the Bure, the
Blackwater Beck, this stream forms the ornamental water-features
within Gunton Park before running southwards to meet the Bure at
Buxton. The immediate edges of the stream gave Suffield some
pastures but eastwards lies typical Norfolk arable fields, the
main economic earner for the parish. The clue to this dispersal
lies to the south of the main settlement where church and nearby
Suffield Hall reside (the hall is recorded by the farm's naming,
Hall Farm), the parish was undoubtedly a closed parish with the
majority of the land in single hands restricting inbound
migration and as a consequence no nucleated settlement
developed. |

A single standard 800-entry register book
covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onwards to
completion in the late 20th century, reflecting the low population
of this parish. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1670 in the
collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this
transcript. A recent film with good quality images. In addition
digitised copies of this register have become available on most of
the main commercial sites for those with appropriate
subscriptions. This wealth of assets makes for a straightforward
piece to prepare with only the clerical standard to concern on
occasion. |
