Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Southacre (often
rendered as South Acre) lies in western central Norfolk about 4
miles north of the market town of Swaffham. Southacre is located
just over a half mile west of the A1065 road which connects
Swaffham with Fakenham. Southacre is a small crossroads
settlement, the twin of its much larger neighbour Castle Acre and
separated from it by the course of the River Nar. Like most
Norfolk parishes Southacre was an arable farming parish, early
gazetteers place as much as 83% of the parish acreage as set to
crops and, if anything, that percentage is even higher today. The
soils around the village are sandy and light and thus easily
worked if less fertile than richer parts of the county further
east. The Nar Valley, itself, is a rather scenic one and the ford
which separates Southacre from its neighbour is a popular bathing
spot with local families. In addition the Peddars Way & North
Norfolk Coastal Trail passes through the village but most choose
the bright lights of Castle Acre for an overnight stop. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in the late 20th century such is the small size of the congregation. This register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO692 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office, in addition to this legacy resource, in recent times, digitised imagery of the register has become available on most of the major commercial sites for those with appropriate subscriptions. As a consequence this was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
