Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Sisland lies in
southeastern Norfolk about 2 miles west of the small market town
of Loddon. Sisland is a tiny place, little more than a hamlet with
no defined village, merely a scatter of farms and cottages dotted
around winding narrow lanes just a mile south of the A146 road
which connects Loddon with the city of Norwich. In a county of
small parishes Sisland stands out as one of the smaller in the
rural areas, the parish covers just over 450 acres and had a
population, in early gazetteers, of just 64 parishioners, tiny
indeed. The course of the River Chet defines the northern boundary
of the parish and the water-meadows of that river's valley would
have provided a little variety to what would, otherwise, have been
a typical arable farming community. |

The register covering the period of this transcript has been deposited with Norfolk Record Office but sadly it is too damaged for issue suffering severe water-damage over the years. As a consequence this transcript has had to be prepared from the extant Bishop's Transcripts which are incomplete, a full run exists up to 1865, with the exception of a single entry for 1863, but after that there are no more before the end of the transcript period. As is often the case with BTs the quality is mixed from very good to rather poor. It can only be hoped that the skills of the conservators at NRo will rescue the original register at some point enabling this transcript to be verified and completed. |
