Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Shouldham lies in western Norfolk about
6 miles northeast of the market town of Downham Market. Shouldham is a
substantial village which lies in the lanes to the east of the A134 road
which links the port of King's Lynn to the market town of Thetford. Shouldham
is a compact settlement built around an elongated oval of lanes which
run north to south. The area is nowadays quite extensively arable but
would have been largely used for sheep grazing in the past as it lies
on the northern extremes of Norfolk's Breckland and has very sandy, acid
soils. A remnant of the former landscape is Shouldham Warren to the north
of the village where, despite modern conifer plantations, a remnant of
lowland heath is preserved. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of the transcript. The first runs to 1851, the second from then until the early 20th century. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MF1430 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The film is a relatively recent one and the images are of a good standard. The handwriting, as you would expect, is mixed but otherwise this was a straightforward transcript to prepare. |
