1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Sheringham All Saints |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Sheringham lies on Norfolk's north coast,
it is one of the premier Norfolk seaside resorts and formerly (and still
residually) one of Norfolk's fishing towns. Sheringham is sited on the
A149 coast road about 4 miles west of its twin (and fierce local rival)
Cromer. The parish, at the time of this transcript had a peculiarly bipolar
situation being divided into the coastal fishing spot of Lower Sheringham
dominated by fishermen and allied trades and the more inland locality
of Upper Sheringham which carried the standard set of farmers, labourers
and their ilk. With the coming of the railway Sheringham expanded rapidly
as a bathing resort and development spread inland but has still to completely
join the two portions. The town has a sheltered site being backed by the
steep (for Norfolk) ridge of the glacial moraine which forms a prominent
feature across North Norfolk. Nowadays Sheringham earns it living from
the bucket and spade trade being thronged by visitors in the summer months
to beach, town streets and the steam railway of the Poppy Line. |

The period of the transcription project is covered by 3 standard 800-entry register books, the first runs to 1838, the second from then till 1861 and the third continuing beyond the end of this project into the early 20th century. The three registers are filmed on Microfilms MF1417 & MF1418 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which were used to prepare this transcript. The film quality is perfectly acceptable albeit with some fading of the original a few entries are a little tricky. However the clerical standard is rather mixed, there are frequent entries which have been inserted out of date sequence, there are entries with incomplete dates and some with incomplete name information. The handwriting also varies from excellent to rather poor. Given these quality issues there is a caveat against accuracy although every effort has been made to eliminate these and hopefully few have made into this transcript. |
