1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Shelton St Mary |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Shelton lies in southern Norfolk, about
11 miles south of the city of Norwich and a similar distance north of
the River Waveney which forms the border with Suffolk. Shelton lies just
to the east of the main A140 road which links Norwich to Ipswich. There
is little centre to the parish with farms and cottages scattered across
Shelton and its neighbour Hardwick. Most housing is grouped around an
irregular rectangular block of lanes centered on Shelton Hall. |

The records for Shelton are a bit of an oddity, a single register book covers 1813 to 1928 but has a curious gap in the coverage. The recordings continue smoothly until 1855 a series of blank pages follows and then entries resume in 1880. It would appear either that no baptisms occurred or they were unrecorded during that period as there are also no Bishop's Transcripts covering this 25 year period either. The register book is filmed on Microfiche 5 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was produced. The fiche is rather elderly and the images poor by modern standards, thankfully the handwriting was acceptable throughout making this straightforward transcript to prepare despite the limitations of the fiche. |
