1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Seething St Margaret & St Remigius |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Seething lies in
southeastern Norfolk roughly 3 miles west of the small market town
of Loddon. Seething sits almost midway between the B1332 (Norwich
to Bungay) road and the A146 (Norwich to Beccles) road and about 3
miles from either. Seething is something of a linear village, its
northern end formed around a triangular area of land with a taile
heading south along the lane which leads to Hedenham. Like many
Norfolk villages Seething acquired a World War 2 airfield which
remains to this day as a private airfield for a local flying club.
The easy terrain which allowed prolific airfields to be created
has also allowed arable farming to grow into broad fields which
nowadays dominate the local landscape, whereas at the time of this
transcript estimates place 25% of the parish's acreage to
pastures, a rare sight today. A measure of the area's terrain is
typified by that lane to Hedenham which does not vary in height
above the sea by more than a handful of metres in the distance
from Seething to Hedenham of almost 4 miles. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in 1888. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1417 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. In recent times digitised copies of these entries have appeared on the major commercial web sites enabling easier checking of the more challenging entries and ensuring this was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
