Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Scoulton lies in Central Norfolk west of
the city of Norwich and sitting on the B1108 which connects the city with
the large village of Watton. Scoulton is a loose collection of cottages
& farm lying along the B road and north in the lanes. This is a wide
plateau area of arable land with few hedges and trees - open to the winds
and with huge skies. There is no village centre or facilities remaining
to Scoulton nowadays and if you travel along the B1108 between Hingham
and Watton you are barely conscious of Scoulton merely a wayside sign. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers
the period of the transcript and indeed continues just beyond to 1887. This
register is irregularly filled in by the incumbents - frequently starting
new years on new pages thus skipping blocks of numbers. Also the completion
of dates is incomplete for some entries where the day or even the month
has not been shown - a rather scruffy record for the parish. The register is filmed on Microfiche 3 & 4 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. These fiche a rather elderly and the quality is also poor making reading of some entries rather tricky - there has been frequent reference to the extant Bishops Transcripts to establish the entry in quite a few cases making for a trying piece of transcription. However in most cases an adequate copy was available thus rendering the end quality hopefully adequate and with few errors creeping in - it is to be hoped. |
