1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Ryston with Roxham St Michael |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Ryston lies in western Norfolk about 2 miles
southeast of the market town of Downham Market, the parish of Roxham,
to its southeast, was dissolved and merged in ancient times. There is
no defined village of Ryston, the parish was a "closed" one
in which all land was held by a single landholder and inward migration
was thereby controlled, hence no village developed beyond the estate of
Ryston Hall. Ryston sits just east of the A10 road which links Kings Lynn
with Cambridge, the Downham Market bypass now cuts past in a cutting just
to the west of Ryston's church. The economy of the parish would have been
dominated by the affairs and interests of the estate, a mixture of arable
and pastoral farming would have been in place, the parish sits just above
the floodplain of the Wissey and those meadows would have varied the farming
mix. Today much of the Ryston estate is a golf course, an amenity well
used by the residents of nearby Downham Market. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in the early 21st century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO787 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office and images of the register are available to view on the commercial web sites. A straightforward, if rather short, register to transcribe with few issues noted. |
