1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Roydon by Lynn All Saints |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Roydon (here given the suffix "by Lynn"
to distinguish it from Norfolk's other Roydon, the latter being near Diss)
lies in western Norfolk about 6 miles northeast of the port of King Lynn.
Roydon is located about 1 miles south of the A148 road which connects
Kings Lynn through to Fakenham and sits on the eastern edge of its eponymous
common. Today Roydon is very much a commuter settlement for the nearby
port town and has largely grown to merge with nearby Grimston & Pott
Row to form a substantial settlement. In the past this was a small farming
community with a large portion of its area devoted to common or heathland,
"for the use of the poor". Today that heath, situated on a narrow
bed of carrstone, is a wildlife sanctuary for both breeding and wintering
birds and the walks across it are a major draw for the area. At the time
of this transcript it was a small community of fewer than 200 souls and
the population would have been dependent upon a mixture of both arable
& pastoral farming with a few rabbits & sheep grazing the heath.

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in the 1960s showing the low volume of baptisms in the parish. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1391 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office, digitised imagery is also available, freely on Familysearch and for a subscription on the major commercial providers. The imagery was used to prepare this transcript which was relatively straightforward to prepare. |
