Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Riddlesworth, which includes the ancient
dissolved parish of Gasthorpe, lies on the Norfolk?Suffolk border about
6 miles east of the market town of Thetford. The parish lies on the banks
of the River Little Ouse just south of the A1066 road which connects Thetford
to Diss. There is not much in the way of settlement in the parish, indeed
there is more of a nucleated settlement at Gasthorpe where a narrow lane
crosses over the river into Suffolk. The parish is dominated by two features,
the hall at Riddlesworth which was built in 1792 to replace an earlier
Elizabethan building and is now a school, and the landscape which covers
both the southern edge of Norfolk's Breckland and the water-meadows and
pastures of the lazily flowing Little Ouse. The parish is dominated by
its Hall and is clearly one of the closed parishes where almost all land,
and hence population movement, was controlled by the Lord of the Manor.
The sandy Breckland landscape, of course, continues across the river in
Suffolk and features extensive conifer plantations growing on what were
former warrenries. The parish was sparsely populated hence the rather
short transcript. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of the transcript and, indeed, continues into the late 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1400 (continuing on MF1401) in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The film is relatively recent, although not of the quality of more recent films, and is of an acceptable quality throughout. A few entries are faded but they are legible with care. As a result this was a relatively straightforward transcript to prepare and it is to be hoped few errors will have crept into its preparation. |
