The parish of Postwick lies in eastern Norfolk
roughly 4 miles east of the city of Norwich and a half-mile
south of the busy A47 road which links the city with the port of
Great Yarmouth. Postwick is a small and compact village set
within a southerly meander of the River Yare and at the time of
this transcript was a typical rural Norfolk village engaged
mainly in the arable farming business. Early gazetteers estimate
that almost 70% of the parish acreage would have been set to
arable crops with the balance met by mainly riverside pastures.
Being so close to the city has, however, brought intense change
to the parish. Nowadays Postwick marks the eastern end of
Norwich's southern bypass where the re-routed A47 rejoins its
former course, a centre for out-of-town car parks, motels and
light industrial estates that have marched over much of the
former cereal fields. The A47 is now a fast dual-carriageway
rather than a turnpike and immediately south of it runs the
Norwich to Great Yarmouth railway all contributing to a loss of
the rural tranquility that Postwick once must have possessed.
Somehow the village retains some of its village feel with narrow
lanes replacing dual-carriageways and many wooded areas,
including the churchyard, to soften the traffic noise. |

A single standard 800-entry register book
covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onwards to
completion in 1900. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1629 in
the collection of Norfolk Record Office, it must be stated that
such is the condition of the register that it is deemed unfit for
issue so film or the on-line digitised images are the only
resources that are available to the user. These images show the
failed spine of the register and some water-damage along the
gutters of each page which, fortuitously, do not unduly impact
legibility. Consequently despite the damage this was a
straightforward piece to prepare. |
