1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Great Plumstead St Mary |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Great Plumstead is located in eastern Norfolk
about 5 miles east of the city of Norwich. Great Plumstead is sited just
north of the busy A47 road which runs west to east across the county,
Great Plumstead's notional centre is about a mile north of that road in
lanes. Great Plumstead was previously a small village but nowadays has
been growing as homes for commuters have spread beyond Norwich's green
belt and today it is a thriving settlement - particularly at evenings
and weekends. Great Plumstead grew up as a settlement which fringed the
ancient Mousehold Wood - a glacial feature of sand and gravel which was
deposited in the last ice age. This gave the settlement a share of the
heathland to the north as well as a share of the richer marshlands to
the south along the River Yare. Great Plumstead at 20 metres above the
sea is neither in the valley or on the ridge which rises a further 10
metres. |

A single standard 800-entry register covers the period of this transcript sadly this register has suffered great harm over the years and must have been in a dreadful state when deposited. The register has been filmed on Microfilm MFRO252 but frankly this is a poor read despite the benefits of modern filming. The damage is such that the edges, right into the outer columns of the entries is blackened and in places totally unreadable. As a consequence the majority of this transcript has been prepared from the extant Bishop's Transcripts, although they were a poor enough read, supplemented by information from the register where this was unreadable on the BT. In short a right hotchpotch and there are likely to be errors as a result. Users should treat this transcript with caution as a result. |
