Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Ormesby St Margaret is in eastern Norfolk,
one of the parishes of the ancient island of Flegg. The parish lies close
to the North Sea coast between Hemsby and Caister and north of the major
port of Great Yarmouth. There are two distinct parts to this parish -
the village of Ormesby itself, lying inland a couple of miles and the
hamlet (now seaside village) of Scratby which was, in the period of this
transcription, focussed on the sea and fishing. |

These records were transcribed from microfiche 5 through to 8 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. This filming, now some 20 years old does show its age being poor in quality and lacking the contrast and clarity of more recent filmings. The standard of the cleric's handwriting varied from the excellent to the quite atrocious being a curate's egg of qualities. As a consequence parts of this transcription were prepared with a degree of uncertainty and frequent references were made to the surviving Bishop's Transcripts to identify the nature of some entries. This transcript as a consequence has a greater warning against complete accuracy than is customary. |
