The Wesleyan congregation in Norwich was founded by John
Wesley in 1754 though the Norfolk Record Office catalogue indicates entries
as early as 1751. This congregation has moved four times in its long history,
the initial chapel being sold to the Lady Huntington's Connection, a short
spell followed at St James Priory before another dedicated chapel was
erected in Cherry Lane, finally the congregation settled in Calvert Street
in 1810 and was there for the whole of the transcript period.
Three registers have been deposited which sadly terminate in 1851, it
is unknown to the author whether more records exist that have yet to be
deposited but should they appear in the public domain then they will be
transcribed and added here. The first register is deposited with the National
Archive as RG4/654, it consists of a small set of hand-written records
then a numbered ruled book. The second register also deposited with the
National Archive as RG4/2178 was started only just before the act to submit
Non-Conformist registers and contains just a brief few records. Both these
registers are filmed on Microfilm MF1156 in the collection of the Norfolk
Record Office - the film is of good quality and the records are clear,
however the hand-writing leaves a little to be desired. The third register,
a standard Wesleyan book with four entries to a page, is deposited with
Norfolk Record Office and filmed on Microfilm MF1728 is of excellent quality
of image but once again suffers from eccentric hands. As is normal with
Non-Conformist registers there is much evidence of entries being completed
out of sequence which could imply error and omission.
