Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St Swithin lies in
western Norwich, one of a series of tiny parishes that line the
city's St Benedict's Street, that street, in turn, follows the
ancient Roman road which crosses Norwich from west to east. St
Swithin's parish was not one of Norwich's poorest parish being
mainly occupied by artisans rather than the hordes of weavers that
characterise the poorer areas across to the north of the River
Wensum. Despite this St Swithin still carried its share of
Norwich's notorious "yards" where dozens were packed in tiny
properties set between and behind the street frontage. Today St
Benedict's Street has lost some of its former prosperity as a
shopping street but has become a home for the specialist shops and
restaurants that flourish in the lower rent areas of large cities. |

Two standard 800-entry registers cover the period of this transcript, the first filmed on Microfilm MFRO233, the second on MFRO292. In addition to these traditional resources digitised imagery is available for this parish, free-to-use on Familysearch and for those with a subscription on all of the major commercial sites. The first register is damaged and unfit for reproduction but has been rescued by filming and digitisation. It must be said that the standard of literacy, at times, is poor with unconventional spelling of names being prevalent; a noticeable trend was the apparently inability for a short period to spell Susan and variants properly, the second s being dropped. Despite these challenges it is to be hoped that an accurate transcript has been made but on this occasion misreads cannot be ruled out. |
