1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Norwich St Laurence |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St Laurence sits on St Benedict's Street
in the heart of the mediaeval walled city of Norwich. One of 5 such parishes
in a half mile stretch the parish is tiny and compact. The area would
have been slightly better economically than the yards and warrens across
the River Wensum, close by to the central core of the city. The occupations
of the menfolk show it as an artisan's area full of craftsmen and trades.
Nowadays the area is one of specialist shops and restaurants - a little
decayed but a back-water from the core of the commercial city. |

These records were transcribed from 2 deposits
with the Norfolk Record Office, the first a 1600 entry book is filmed on
Microfilm MF/RO323B, despite the elderly filming the images are, for a Norwich
parish, surprisingly good. The second book commencing in 1874 is filmed
on Microfiche 13, again an early filming but legible for the main part. During such a large transcript the handwriting changes rapidly as clerks come and go in a city parish. Unfortunately not all were easy to decipher - whilst every care has been taken to accurately transcribe the entries it is possible that misreading may have occurred at one-or-two periods in the transcript. |
