Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St Julian within
the city of Norwich lies in the most southern part of the medieval
city covering a small area of King Street and its surrounding
streets. Like most Norwich parishes this tiny acreage was packed
with housing largely confined within the city walls and full of
courts & yards occupied by the poorer of the community. St
Julian parish served the port of Norwich being fronted with
wharves alongside the River Wensum, the employment generated by
that port being reflected in the occupations of the menfolk listed
in this transcriptions. The impact of that employment was to make
St Julian parish an "up-market" area of the city with less of the
droves of near-poverty weavers characterised in other less
fortunate parishes. Norwich's port was largely driven by two
principal trades - the export of the output of all those weavers
and the movement of the county's agricultural produce. Nowadays
the port has declined to nothing, the river populated more by
pleasure craft than freight and the area declined with it, King
Street's less salubrious status as Norwich's "red-light" district
has been transformed in recent times with new housing reviving the
area and improved river crossings accessing the rail station
making it once again an attractive part of the city in which to
live. |

The period of this transcript is covered by two registers, the first covering 1813 to 1863 is a standard 1600-entry book, that which follows being the more typical 800-entry register. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MFRO356 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office, this more recent film replaces the elderly fiche which once held the only copy available to researchers. In more recent times digitised imagery of these registers, free-to-view on Familysearch and for those with a subscription on the commercial sites greatly expanding availability. As a consequence this transcript becomes a straightforward piece to prepare even if the clerical standard is lacking in parts leading to a caveat as to the likelihood of one-or-two misreads. |
