1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Norwich St John Timberhill |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St John Timberhill, there
being 3 St Johns in Norwich hence the requirement for a clarifying
suffix, lies in the southeastern part of the medieval centre of
the city close to the Castle and within the main shopping
district. Norwich was divided into 35 parishes at the time of this
transcript each covering a tiny area of the city centre, St John
Timberhill was no exception covering a mere handful of city
blocks. Today the area of the parish is dominated by the shopping
centre of the Castle Mall with other stores gathered around
amongst restaurants and inns. St John Timberhill was one of the
better-off parishes of the city, not a real warren of weavers like
some across the River Wensum. An area of artisans and tradesmen
with some of the more wealthy residents dotted amongst the
occupations recorded here. |

Two register books cover the period of this transcript, the second running onwards to completion in 1888. The first register is a conventional 800-entry book, the clerk, however, continues beyond completion on loose self-numbered sheets for some time. The second register is an unconventional pre-printed book, the normal registers have 8 entries vertically down a single folio, this register has the 8 entries spread horizontally across a double-page spread with header and 3 entries on the left-hand folio and the remaining 5 on the right-hand folio. Both register are filmed on Microfilm MF1519 which was used to prepare this transcript, the film is of an acceptable reproduction making for a straightforward piece to prepare. Close scrutiny of the numbering will reveal some pages completed out-of-sequence and entries skipped to start a new year on a new page. |
