Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St James Pockthorpe lies in the north of
the city of Norwich, a true suburb in being outside the original mediaeval
walls of the city. Part of Norwich-over-the-Water, that portion to the
north of the River Wensum, St James was one of the poorer neighbourhoods
of the city, a warren of yards and unsanitary living conditions. The area
was the physical home of much of the city's artisan weaving industry,
an industry that declined significantly and almost disappeared during
the life of this transcript. A review of the baptisms show that in each
decade the percentage of babies baptised to men working in the trade declined
significantly from being around 50% of the area's population to almost
nothing. |

The period of this transcript covers no fewer than 5 separate register books, the first two books are 1600 entry, the following three 800 entry. All 5 registers are filmed on Microfiche but imagery of all 5 are available to view freely on Familysearch and also on all 3 major commercial providers (with a subscription). The imagery of the fiche is poor and that online suffers too from fading necessitating the use of image processing on occasion to make the entries legible. It should be noted that the 3 registers from 1855 onward are not pre-stamped with numbering, the clerk continues the numbering from the prior register for the first, the numbering of the second last almost the whole way through, whilst in the last register numbering ceases after the first 3 entries, the numbering shown has been added as an aid to researchers locating entries they may be interested in. It should be stated that the clerical standard of the earlier registers is poor, mangling of names being a common feature, as all entries are transcribed as written users should be creative in their use of variants as a result. |
