Baptisms 1813 to 1880
St Gregory's parish lies in the heart of the city of Norwich,
just to the north of the modern market place and at the eastern end of
the row of churches lining St Benedict's street, the former Roman east-west
route through the city. The parish was well-to-do with middle-class citizens
rather dominating the populace. Given the parish's proximity to St Peter
Mancroft the most prestigious church in the city there was no doubt some
rub-off on the neighbouring area. Nowadays the parish is scantily inhabited
as most of the population has departed the mediaeval centre and the area
is largely a shopping and business district with numerous restaurants
and pubs. |

A single register book of 1600 entries covers the period of the transcript and continues beyond until 1890. This register was deposited many years ago and has been filmed twice, microfiche 13 to 15 are of a poor viewing standard being aged and faint, of slightly better viewing is Microfilm MF/RO323B in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. Whilst the film is not of the high quality of present films it is adequate to the job. However for quite a prestigious church St Gregory has suffered from a most miserable selection of clerics with poor handwriting, errors, crossings-out and some difficult reading at times. A gentle warning, therefore, that on occasion there may have been misreads to creep in, hopefully these have been few. |
