1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Norwich Willow Lane Catholic Chapel |
Baptisms 1848 to 1880
Catholicism has a long history in Norwich, despite the persecution of the post-reformation era. Prior to the 18th century and after the reformation it would have largely been practiced in a somewhat secretive fashion and records would have been clandestine at best or incriminating at worst. As times and attitudes improved a chapel was built in 1764 in St Andrew's Street within the city and in 1786 it moved to a house in Willow Lane close by to St Giles' church. The chapel is now the home of a local firm of Solicitors. Register, however, are restricted to just 2 which commence in 1848. These two register are filmed on Microfilm MFRO618 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office and they were used to prepare this transcript. The film is one of the modern good quality films which is needful given the poor clerical standard exhibited. It should be noted that the numbering is my sequential number to aid in finding an entry, it should also be noted that the registers contain a number of adult baptisms with no genealogical detail just a name and date - these are indicated by gaps in the numbering. Some entries are in Latin but all have been anglicized. The poor clerical standards extends to recording accuracy - there are many out-of-date-sequence entries and if you are looking for surname variants this register is a good place to start! The register does, however, cover a much wider area than the city itself - locations are noted in the volumes and include almost anywhere within several miles of the city. It is interesting to note families of my cognisance which baptise a child in this register who also baptise others in other denomination registers including Anglican. |
