1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Neatishead St Peter |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Neatishead lies in
northeastern Norfolk about 3 miles southwest of the small market
town of Stalham. Neatishead sits a mile or so east of the A1151
road which connects the city of Norwich through Wroxham &
Hoveton to Stalham. Neatishead is a curiously dispersed village,
the notional centre gathered around the staithe is augmented by
settlements at the 3 commons, Butchers, Workhouse &
Threehammer Commons, the latter holding the village church.
Neatishead sits on the western side of Barton Broad, one of a
series of Broads which flank the course of the River Ant, Limekiln
Dike connects the staithe with the main Broad. This access to the
Broadland network gave variety to Neatishead's economy, the usual
arable activities being supplemented with river traffic as well as
classical Broadland trades such as reed thatch harvesting and
wildfowling. The wherries of the Ant were instrumental in getting
the grain from field to market traveling by way of the Ant and the
other rivers to the port at Great Yarmouth and to the city of
Norwich and Neatishead staithe was an important loading point on
that network. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript, the second running onward to completion only in 1976. Both registers are filmed on Microfiche (4 - 6) in the collection of Norfolk Record Office but these fiche are rather elderly and better quality imagery is available online. Like most early register deposits, Neatishead baptisms are free to view on Familysearch and they are also available for those with a subscription on the major commercial sites. The use of this imagery enabled a straightforward piece to be prepared. |
