Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Moulton St Mary lies in eastern Norfolk
about 2 miles south of the small town of Acle. Moulton St Mary is a small
village, little more than a hamlet, which sits on the narrow lane running
south from Acle towards Reedham and the River Yare. A largely farming
community the village economy would have been supplemented by the attractions
of the nearby marshes, a large wooded valley running towards Acle having
decoy's indicative of the wildfowling prevalent in the area. Reed harvesting
for thatch would also have been a prominent activity. Today Moulton St
Mary is little more than a straggle of farms and cottages with no defined
village centre strung across a broad and largely flat landscape. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers both the period of this transcript and runs onward to completion in 1963. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1398 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. Whilst the images of the register are adequate to the task the standard of clerical work leaves a lot to be desired, the register is characterised by out-of-date-sequence entries, numerous crossing out and re-entries as well as copious entries squeezed into the margins as afterthoughts. In summary a clerical mess and it is thought likely that other baptisms simply went unrecorded due to incompetence. |
