The parish of Morton on the Hill lies in central Norfolk about 8 miles northwest of the city of Norfolk. Morton on the Hill lies just south of the A1067 road which connects Norwich with Fakenham. Morton on the Hill parish is dominated by the estate of Morton Hall and with no public roads crossing it is largely private land in the hands of the Hall's owners. A typical Norfolk parish Morton on the hill probably had a little more pasture than most Norfolk parishes as it contained the southern flood plains of the nearby River Wensum within its bounds. Today roughly half of the estate is set to woodland with the remainder, away from the river, arable like the surrounding parishes.

St Margaret's church sits beside the hall within the estate and at first glance is seemingly inaccessible. The church is, however, cared for by the Churches' Conservation Trust and can be visited by following the driveway to the hall north from the road between Weston Longville & Ringland. As can be seen accidents have befallen the church, the round tower - probably Saxo-Norman and 11th century collapsed onto the main body in 1959 and there was a strong possibility that the church would be left to fall into ruin. Enthusiastic volunteering has, however, preserved what remains, the main body is largely 13th century and early English Gothic in style, and whilst a private chapel for the hall public services are occasionally held within the remainder of the building. A small white sign marks the turning from the lane and leads to the hall, the church being offset to your left slightly sits within a wooded churchyard but enough space remains to adequately capture this unusual Norfolk church.
