Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Morley St Peter,
one of two such Morleys in the area, lies in the southeastern
portion of central Norfolk about 4 miles southwest of the market
town of Wymondham. Morley St Peter lies roughly 2 miles north of
the A11 road which links the city of Norwich to London. Morley St
Peter is a tiny place with not even an annotation on today's
Ordnance Survey maps. The parish is dominated by the land of
Morley Old Hall, a large brick house of c1600, those lands would
have acted as a closed parish restricting inbound migration and
leading to no defined village arising. Around the church there are
a few farms and cottages but little else. The parish, like so many
in mid-Norfolk is dominated by arable farming with the fields
today full of cereals, beet and oil-seed.Morley St Peter was
always a small parish of barely 1,000 acres with an equally small
congregation to match. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in the mid-20th century. This register is filmed on Microfiche 4 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. This fiche, like so many, is rather elderly and of poor quality. Thankfully digitised versions of this register have become available recently, free to view on Familysearch and for those with a subscription on all of the major commercial sites. As a consequence this was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
