Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Metton lies in
northeastern Norfolk roughly 3 miles southwest of the coastal
resort of Cromer. Metton sits just over a mile west of the A140
road which connects Cromer with the city of Norwich. A tiny place,
the parish consisted of barely 662 acres there remains very little
to Metton. A collection of farms and cottages along a lane running
from Roughton towards Gresham. The presence of the eponymous hall,
property of the Windham family at the time of this transcript, is
indicative that Metton was a closed parish with all land held by
the lord of the manor and discouraging inbound migration, as a
result no defined village has grown. The local economy of the
parish would have been driven by the needs of the estate and like
most Norfolk parishes arable farming was the dominant activity. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in the late 20th century, a reflection of the low population of this parish. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF589 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office but like so many parishes today digitised images are freely available to view on Familysearch and for those with a subscription on the major commercial sites that making this transcript was a straightforward affair. |
